Benjamin Grau

Benjamin Grau (he/him), geboren 1987 in Hamburg, wohnhaft in Köln, ist Musiker und Komponist. Sein Konzertexamen im Fach elektronische Komposition bei Prof. Michael Beil an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln schloss er im Oktober 2020 ab. Weiteren Unterricht erhielt er von Luis Antunes Pena, Brigitta Muntendorf, Georg Friedrich Haas und Simon Steen Andersen.

Er arbeitete mit dem Countertenor Kai Wessel, Ensemble Garage, Electronic ID und Musikfabrik. Seine Musik wurde in Deutschland, dem europäischen Ausland und Asien u.a. auf der Ruhrtriennale, ACHT BRÜCKEN, Tampere Biennale (Finnland), Daegu International Dance Festival (Südkorea) und bei den Kunstfestspielen Herrenhausen aufgeführt. Seine Komposition String to String erhielt den zweiten Preis beim internationalen ACHT BRÜCKEN Kompositionswettbewerb 2019.

In seiner Musik zieht er Inspiration aus seiner bisherigen musikalischen Sozialisation, die vor allem im Bereich populärer Musik stattfand. In seinem Schaffensprozess isoliert er bestimmte Klänge, Strukturen und Prozesse, die in ihm eine starke, innerliche Reaktion hervorrufen und untersucht sie, weitet sie aus, treibt sie in Extreme, die mit ihrem ursprünglichen Kontext wenig Ähnlichkeit haben. Die gewonnenen Materialien und Versatzstücke setzt er wieder zusammen, in einer Art, welche seine ursprüngliche emotionale und körperliche Reaktion einfängt und ausdehnt – sie greifbar macht. Dabei entwickelt er eine eigene Sprache, welche die Idiome der Popularmusik und zeitgenössischen Komposition hinter sich lässt.

Nach seinem Studium war Benjamin Grau Gründungsmitglied des Computermusik-Trios Hackmeck, das sich auf algorithmische Live-Komposition spezialisiert hat. Ebenso gründete er das instrumental-elektronische Duo multipol mit Lola Rubio.Mit diesen und in anderen Konstellationen produzierte er Tonträger, Konzerte und Musikvideos.

In seiner künstlerischen Arbeit vollzog sich in diesen Jahren eine Verlagerung weg von klassischer Komposition hin zu selbst programmierter und gespielter Live-Elektronik in experimentellen Aufführungsformaten. Neben reinen Musikprojekten entstanden auch interdisziplinäre Werke, die neue Konzertinszenierungen erprobten und sich teilweise ortsspezifisch mit Interviews und Fundstücken auseinandersetzen. Musikalisch bewegt er sich im Zwischenbereich von experimenteller, improvisierter Musik, Hörspiel und Popularmusik.

In seinen Arbeitsprozessen wandte sich Benjamin Grau zunehmend kollaborativen Ansätzen zu. Er verfolgte das Ziel, die im Kompositionsstudium gewonnene Expertise in Dramaturgie und Zeitgestaltung zu nutzen und gleichzeitig die Limitationen des tradierten Rollenverständnisses hinter sich zu lassen.

Zu diesem Zweck entwickelte er 2023 mit Unterstützung eines Recherchestipendiums der Stadt Köln ein eigenes, maßgeschneidertes Controller-Setup für seine Live-Elektronik-Performances – von Schaltplänen über Platinenlayout bis hin zur Fertigung. Dieses individuell angefertigte elektronische Instrument ermöglicht ihm nun eine hohe Flexibilität bei der klanglichen Erforschung und Improvisation. Dieses nutzt er, um dynamischen Prozessen in kollaborativen Kontexten direkt und intuitiv zu begegnen.

Benjamin Grau had an enriching internship at Tongji University in Shanghai in 2015/16. Through close collaboration with the lecturers at the College of Arts and Media there, he was able to get deeply involved in intercultural projects and assist with teaching. This time in China was very formative for him and allowed a deep connection to Chinese culture to grow within him. These experiences abroad had a lasting influence on his further artistic career.

In his music, he draws inspiration from his previous musical socialization, which took place mainly in the field of popular music. In his creative process, he isolates certain sounds, structures and processes that elicit a strong, innate reaction in him, and then examines, expands and takes them to extreme ends that have little similarity to their original context. He then reassembles the materials and elements in a way that captures and extends his original emotional and physical reaction – making it tangible. In doing so, he develops his own language that moves beyond the idioms of popular music and contemporary composition.

After his studies, Benjamin Grau was a founding member of the computer music trio Hackmeck, which specializes in algorithmic live composition. He also founded the instrumental-electronic duo multipol with Lola Rubio. With these and other collaborations, he has produced recordings, concerts and music videos.

In these years, his artistic work has shifted away from classical composition towards self-programmed and performed live electronics in experimental performance formats. In addition to pure music projects, he has also created interdisciplinary works that explore new concert stagings and partially engage with site-specific interviews and found materials. Musically, he moves in the interstices of experimental, improvised music, radio play and popular music.

In his working processes, Benjamin Grau increasingly turned to collaborative approaches. He pursued the goal of utilizing the expertise in structuring the musical flow and shaping the temporal elements that he had gained in his composition studies, while leaving behind the limitations of traditional role understanding.

For this purpose, in 2023 he developed his own customized controller setup for his live electronic performances, from circuit diagrams to circuit board layout to production, with the support of a research grant from the City of Cologne. This individually crafted electronic instrument now gives him great flexibility in sound exploration and improvisation. He uses this to engage more directly and intuitively with dynamic processes in collaborative contexts.
